In this presentation, you will learn the basics about retiring with the federal employees' group life insurance program (FEGLI). This information is current as of May 2015. When you retire, you are eligible to continue FEGLI life insurance if you meet all four of these requirements: 1. You must retire on an immediate annuity under a retirement system for civilian federal employees. Immediate annuity means an annuity that begins no later than one month after the end of the pay period during which you separated from service or a minimum retirement age plus 10 annuity for which the starting date has been postponed. Eligible retirement systems include the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), and several others. 2. You must have been insured by FEGLI for the five years of service immediately before the date your annuity starts, or for the full period or periods of service during which you are eligible to be insured if less than five years. 3. You must be enrolled in FEGLI on the date you retire. 4. You must not have converted your FEGLI coverage to an individual policy. Note that all of these requirements, including the five-year or all opportunity requirement, apply to each type and each multiple of FEGLI coverage you wish to bring into retirement. There are two categories of FEGLI life insurance: basic and optional. Basic coverage covers the life of the employee or annuitant. For an annuitant, basic coverage is based on your annual rate of pay on the date of your separation for retirement or the date you complete twelve months in non-pay status.
